Most healthcare design rankings are written for the US market and judge agencies on HIPAA alone. If you are building a digital health product in Europe, or selling into European patients and clinics, you also need a team that understands GDPR, the EU Medical Device Regulation for software and European accessibility rules.
Good European options by scenario:
Why Europe is different
Healthtech products sold in Europe answer to different rules than those sold in the US, and the design work changes with them.
- GDPR. Health data is a special category of personal data. Products need a clear legal basis for processing it, data minimisation and consent that people actually understand. Much of that lives in the interface: what you ask for, when and how you explain it.
- The EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Software that diagnoses, monitors or informs treatment decisions can qualify as a medical device. That brings usability engineering and documentation into the design process from the start.
- Accessibility. WCAG 2.1 AA is the usual reference in Europe, and the European Accessibility Act, in force since June 2025, raises expectations for many digital services. Health products are used by older people, people with low vision and people under stress, so accessibility is not optional.
- Many languages and healthcare systems. A European product often needs several languages and has to fit public and private systems that work very differently from country to country.
If your product also targets the US, you will need HIPAA as well. A good European partner should be able to tell you which of these rules shape your product and design for them, while your legal and compliance team decides how they apply.
How we chose
We looked for agencies that:
- have a team or office in Europe;
- publish health or medtech work with named clients or clear project descriptions;
- involve patients, clinicians or specialists in research and testing;
- show how they think about data, privacy and accessibility.
This is INSAIM's blog, and we include ourselves. We describe every other agency from its own website and public profiles. We have not ranked agencies against each other: the right choice depends on your product and stage.

Keep in mind: suited to large, multi-team programmes rather than an early-stage startup's first product.

Patient and practitioner apps and healthcare websites for startups
INSAIM
Best for: healthtech startups that need a patient or practitioner app, or a healthcare website, designed by one team in Europe.
INSAIM is a design and development agency in Lisbon, Portugal. We design digital health products for startups and healthcare teams: patient and practitioner apps and healthcare websites. Since 2016 we have delivered 300+ projects for clients in 22+ countries.
Health work:
- WellO, for the Academy of Integrative Nutraceutics. A health-tracking app that connects nutritionists with their clients. We designed two linked flows, one for the practitioner and one for the client, and grew the product from a nutrition diary into a platform with an AI meal assistant, video courses and in-app supplement purchases. May 2024 to September 2025, with user research and testing.
- ITUS Group. A website for an orthopaedic rehabilitation centre, for patients and specialists. We started with research and wireframes, gave complex rehabilitation programmes a clear structure and built trust with specialist profiles and certifications. 2025.
How we work. We start with research and test with the people who will use the product: patients, practitioners and the teams who run care programmes.
Prices. MVP product design from $5,000, a landing page in Webflow or Framer from $5,000, a corporate website from $8,000. A design subscription for product and website work costs $3,900 a month.
Keep in mind: we are a design partner for startups and growing teams. For a large hospital system or a regulated medical device programme, a larger consultancy or a human factors specialist may suit you better.
What to ask a healthtech design agency
- Two comparable case studies. Ask for projects with real patients, clinicians or administrators, not only screenshots.
- Who they research with. How they recruit and test with patients and specialists.
- How they handle health data in design. What they ask for, when, and how they explain it to users.
- Accessibility. Which standard they design to and how they test it.
- Regulation. Whether they have worked on products under GDPR, the MDR or HIPAA, and how they work with your compliance team.
- Marketing site and product. Whether the website is kept separate from systems that store patient data.

FAQ
Which design agencies in Europe specialise in healthtech?
ustwo and Cieden work on complex health products, UX Studio, Eleken and Fruto on research-led health SaaS and medtech, Nordic Usability on medical device usability, Phenomenon Studio on design and development, and INSAIM on patient and practitioner apps and healthcare websites for startups.
What should a healthtech design agency know about GDPR?
That health data is a special category of personal data, and that consent, data minimisation and clear explanations need to be designed into the product, not added later. Your legal team decides how the rules apply; the agency should design for them.
Does my health app count as a medical device in the EU?
It can. Software that diagnoses, monitors or informs treatment decisions may fall under the EU Medical Device Regulation. Check with a regulatory specialist early, because it changes the design and documentation process.
How much does healthtech app design cost?
It depends on the product. At INSAIM, MVP product design starts at $5,000, and many European agencies quote per project after discovery.
Do European agencies work with US health products?
Many do. If your product targets the US, ask how the agency handles HIPAA requirements alongside your engineering and compliance team.
